Real estate taxes due Friday
The first installment payment of 2015 county real estate taxes is due today, and the second installment is due on Dec. 7, Halifax County Treasurer Ruth S. Oakes reminded county taxpayers on Friday.
Postmarks dated June 5 will be accepted without penalty and interest on the first installment of the real estate taxes. Under state law, a 10 percent penalty and a 10 percent per annum interest rate will be added to all unpaid taxes.
Taxpayers are asked to keep the second installment payment for Dec. 7, since they will not receive a second bill for the remainder of their annual tax, Oakes said.
“You may mail both installments if you wish and pay your entire tax bill in full by June 5. If you desire a receipt, please send a self-addressed stamped envelope,” the treasurer added.
Checks should be made payable to Halifax County Treasurer and returned in the envelope provided for payment.
For payments, detach all bill coupons and mail check or money order to the Halifax County Treasurer’s office, P.O. Box 825, Halifax, VA 24558. Payments also may be made at the county treasurer’s office located in the Mary Bethune Office Complex at 1030 Cowford Road in Halifax.
Also taxpayers can use major credit/debit cards to make payments for a nominal fee online at WebFeePay.com. Enter bill numbers, category of tax and telephone number when using online payment. Online payments should also be recorded as of June 5.
“If you received a tax bill that is escrowed with your monthly payment, please forward your bill to the appropriate bank or mortgage company. If you are a new land owner after January 1, and did not receive a bill, please call the Halifax County Treasurer’s Office,” Oakes said.
Assessments on the land book are made as of Jan. 1. It is the responsibility of the owner to make sure his bills are paid in a timely manner, she added.
All address changes should be forwarded to the commissioner of revenue at 434-476-3314.
“If you did not receive a bill, please call the Halifax County Treasurer’s Office at 434-476-3318 Monday-Friday from 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m.,” Oakes said
“Due to the real estate tax deadline on June 5, our office has been inundated with phone calls and walk-in customers. The county phones lines are set up so that they will not ring busy as they continuously roll over to other lines. Your call is very important to us, if you call, and we do not answer, please try back,” Oakes said.
