5 Things to Know About the Economy This Week

The Treasury Department on Wednesday night announced a woman will soon be featured on the $10 bill.

It is yet unclear which historic woman will be featured on the new bill and whether Alexander Hamilton, the country’s first treasury secretary and current face of the $10 bill, will be removed from the currency entirely.

The new bills will be released in 2020, to mark the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment, which was ratified on Aug. 18, 1920, and gave women the right to vote.

What It Means:

Activists picked up steam in recent months in a campaign to place a woman on a major U.S. bill. Former President Andrew Jackson, who is currently the face of the $20 bill, was considered to be a more likely candidate to be replaced, considering he is remembered by many for ordering the relocation of more than 100,000 American Indians during his presidency.

“While it might not be the 20 dollar bill, make no mistake: this is a historic announcement and a big step forward,” Sen. Jeanne Shaheen, D-N.H., said in a statement Wednesday. “Young girls across this country will soon be able to see an inspiring woman on the 10 dollar bill who helped shape our country into what it is today and know that they too can grow up and do something great for their country.”

The Treasury Department has yet to finalize which female patriot will appear on the new currency but is encouraging the public to share its ideas by sharing “#TheNew10” on social media or by visiting thenew10.treasury.gov.
