A hotel is any “establishment that provides paid lodging on a short term basis.” When hotels were first established, the accommodations provided were very basic usually just comprising of a single room with a bed, cupboard, a small coffee table, and a wash stand. With changing times however, the hotel industry has grown drastically. Today’s rooms are fully stocked with as many modern technologies as possible. These include, bathroom, air conditioning, television, Wi-Fi, and a mini-bar containing snacks and drinks.

With this dramatic change in the industry, there has also been the rise of different types of hotels to suit the needs, desires, and budgets of different individuals. The two main types of hotels are luxury hotels and budget hotels. While the basic amenities provided in these two hotels may be similar, they have a few important differences.

Budget Hotels

These budget hotels were established for people with small budgets who want to spend as little as possible. Rooms in these hotels are equipped with basic facilities including a bed and washing facilities. The bathrooms however are usually communal. Most budget hotels are old and were established several years ago and are not as clean and fancy as luxury hotels. The fixtures in budget hotels are often old and worn out and there are usually no free services offered as promotions. The most these hotels offer are a simple breakfast or a newspaper, which could also be included in the price they charge at the beginning.

Rates for budget hotels differ based on the location of the hotel. For example in Los Angeles, budgets can charge between $45 and $119.

Luxury Hotels

This type of hotel is for those who are willing to spend more on their stay for a lavish lifestyle. Employees at these hotels are trained to cater to every need of their guests with different luxuries. These hotels are constructed to provide its guests a stress-free and comfortable stay. In addition to the basic amenities provided in these luxurious rooms, these hotels are also equipped with spas that offer massages, gyms with the latest exercise equipment, swimming pools, beauty centres, in house bars, restaurants, and laundry services.

These services are obviously priced higher compared to budget hotels. Luxury hotels also provide free room service, free newspapers, and a great selection of channels on TV. Amenities such as robes and slippers are also provided. Similar to budget hotels, the rates for luxury hotels also depend on the location. Luxury hotels in London cost between 240-525 pound sterling per day.

It is true that you get what you pay for. So if you have the money to splurge on an expensive room, luxury hotels will be the best fit for you. On the other hand, if you’re staying away from home for a few days, and you’re on a budget, you should pick budget hotels!
