The NVIDIA Shield Tablet has received an update to Android 5.1.1. Besides the new build of the Android OS, the update includes a fix for an audio problem that plagues users of the slate. When loading certain games, some Shield owners reportedly hear a loud noise that is characterized as a screeching sound. The update also brings the usual performance improvements and stability, along with system-wide optimizations and fixes.

The upgrade, to version 3.1, is coming to Shield users via an OTA update. The file weighs in at 767MB, which means that you should be on a Wi-Fi connection when starting the updating process. The battery should be charged to at least 50% before downloading and installing Android 5.1.1.

Back in April, we told you to expect the Android 5.1.1 update to hit the device within weeks. The update took a little bit longer than expected, but it is now here. Because it is being sent out in waves, you might have to wait a few days, or even longer, for it to arrive. If it hasn’t yet arrived, there is no reason to call out the National Guard. Be patient, and eventually Android 5.1.1 will be running on your NVIDIA Shield. And hopefully you won’t have to put up with that screeching sound any longer.
