If you are looking to build a successful career in retail, remember, it all starts with landing the right job. Whether you have some experience in sales or are new to retail, it is possible to build a lucrative career if you know what you are looking for and how to go about getting it! When it comes to retail, there are so many positions available and rungs on the corporate ladder that you need to start with a clear picture of where you want to be this time next year, or the year after, or even the year after that. Set goals for yourself, but always remember, it all starts with the application.

Entry Level Positions

In retail, you can probably always count on being hired in an entry-level position. Sometimes you will start as a stocker or bagger and other times you will be offered a job in sales. From the shipping and warehouses to sales and support staff, there are a number of entry-level positions you can apply for. Although your ultimate goal is to get on as a salesperson so that you will boost your earnings with commissions, you might need to work your way into that position.

How to Apply for a Job in Retail

Now that you understand that you may not actually start in sales, what you do need to do is figure out where you would like to work. How do they take applications? Do you need to apply in person or are they up with the latest technology of the 21st Century so that you can submit an application online? Perhaps you want to apply at a department store chain and would like to submit a shoe dept job application. You saw ads that they were hiring in that department, so why not give it a shot? Maybe someday you will work your way into jewelry or housewares, but for now, you need to get that application in for those openings in shoes.

Before Submitting an Application

While you may not see the need to compile a professional looking resumé when you are only applying for an entry-level job, you wouldn’t believe how many applicants actually landed better jobs because they took the extra initiative. On a resumé, you have the opportunity to do more than outline your job and educational history. You can outline your goals as well. A well-written cover letter is also a must. The key to building a successful job in retail in the shoe department is getting your foot in the door, no pun intended! If you don’t know how to write a resumé, there are online sites that help for free and some are paid, but get the help. A resumé is an important factor in today’s job application process.

Once you have landed the job, remember your success is going to be totally up to you. It is imperative that you get to work on time every day, don’t miss work unless youhave a valid and verifiable reason, and show team spirit. Be competitive, but remember, the company wants employees who put the company first. That means being a vital part of a corporate team. And to think – it all began with a simple application you completed in the comfort of your home with a hot cup of coffee and last year’s laptop. How cool is that?
