When most of us think of a typical GPS tracker, we immediately look to a car. After all, this is when GPS technology really did enter the mainstream world; most of us now drive around with map systems either installed, or bought separately.

Something that many of us don’t realize is that this technology is transforming other industries. One such industry is security, which benefits immensely through the wonders that GPS offers.

Through the course of today’s post we will now take a look at this topic in-detail, and show how GPS is proving to be a Godsend for security professionals around the world.

GPS trackers help to keep valuable items safe

If we were to roll back the years, one of the most common ways that businesses were to keep prized items save was to store them in secure deposit boxes – usually in another area of the city. In short, many didn’t trust their own infrastructure with keeping them safe and were subsequently happy to pay a premium to have some piece of mind.

At this point, many people are probably questioning just how GPS technology can make a difference in this regard. The answer involves geo fences.

Technology now exists where an “invisible” fence can be created through the use of GPS. The owner of the device can dictate the exact perimeter of this fence. In relation to the secure item example, this fence should be the area in which a particular object is not allowed to escape through.

If the object does pass through this geo fence, an alarm will sound. This will inform all parties that the object has been removed. These parties can come in the form of the object owner, or even the police if the matter requires.

The process doesn’t stop there, though. As well as sounding this alarm, the object is completely trackable. This means that if it is in the hands of thieves, as long as the GPS tracker has not been tampered with, it’s possible to quickly identify where in the world the object is. Considering the fact that the alarm immediately informed those concerned that the object had been removed, it means that the whole process to track down this item is very quick indeed.

How the devices work in tracking criminals

Perhaps a more common solution is when the authorities attach one of these trackers onto the vehicle of a suspect’s car. This is usually a long-term project; law enforcement officials will tend to track a person’s whereabouts and use this as evidence at a later date.

The beauty about this for these officials is that the suspect in question doesn’t tend to know that they are being tracked. In other words, there is no official physically tracking them, which condenses suspicions and means that it’s easier than ever before to catch criminals and supply evidence against them. The devices tend to be very small to start with, which means that they are often not detected as well.
