Boy, 8, dies from injuries after being struck by car

An 8-year-old boy who was struck by a vehicle Monday, June 1, in Jamestown Township has died as the result of his injuries.

Austin Lotterman, who attended Heritage Christian Schools in Hudsonville, ran into the roadway near the 4300 block of Adams Street and was struck by a vehicle traveling westbound.

Witnesses told police Austin was running in his yard toward the roadway, stopped and looked in one direction before running across the roadway.

The vehicle, driven by Todd Berends, 54, of Holland, was traveling westbound and despite swerving into the oncoming lane was unable to avoid striking the boy with the front passenger side of his vehicle. The crash occurred shortly after 5:30 p.m. Monday.

According to police, Berends, a physicians assistant, was rendered aid to the child when deputies and fire and rescue arrived on scene.

Austin was flown by helicopter to Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 2 a.m. Tuesday morning.

Berends was not injured and no alcohol or drugs are suspected.
