Apple recalls product over fire safety fears

Apple have announced a voluntary recall of one of its products over fears the product may reheat and pose a fire safety risk.

Beats Pill XL speakers, manufactured by Beats – the company founded by Dr Dre and record producer Jimmy Iovine and which Apple acquired for $3bn last year – are the affected product.

“Apple has determined that, in rare cases, the battery in the Beats Pill XL Speaker may overheat and pose a fire safety risk. This product has been sold worldwide since January 2014 by Beats, Apple, and other retailers,” Apple said in a statement.

“Customer safety is always a top priority at both Apple and Beats, and we have voluntarily decided to recall this product. If you have a Beats Pill XL Speaker, please stop using it and follow the process below to send it to Apple.”

Customers are being asked to stop using the gadget, with eligible customers are able to get a refund from the company (find out more here) of either Apple Store credit or an electronic payment of $325.

No other Apple or Beats products are affected by the recall.
